How To Keep Flowers Lasting Long

To water fresh cut flowers in a vase, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Vase: Clean the vase with soap and water to remove any bacteria. Rinse thoroughly before filling it with water.

  2. Trim the Stems: Use sharp scissors or floral shears to trim about an inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases water absorption. Remove any leaves that would be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth.

  3. Water Temperature: Fill the vase with lukewarm water. Avoid using cold water, which can shock the flowers, or hot water, which can cause them to wilt faster.

  4. Add Flower Food (Optional): If flower food is provided with the bouquet, follow the instructions on the packet to dissolve it in the water. Flower food contains nutrients and bactericides that can extend the vase life of the flowers.

  5. Arrange the Flowers: Arrange the flowers in the vase as desired. Make sure the stems are evenly distributed and not overcrowded to allow for proper water uptake.

  6. Monitor Water Level: Check the water level in the vase daily and top up with fresh water as needed. Fresh cut flowers can drink a lot of water, especially in the first few days after being placed in a vase.

  7. Change the Water: Every 2-3 days, change the water in the vase. Before adding fresh water, re-trim the stems by cutting off another inch at a 45-degree angle. This helps prevent bacterial buildup and keeps the flowers hydrated.

  8. Remove Wilting Flowers: Check the bouquet regularly for any wilting or decaying flowers. Remove them promptly to prevent the spread of bacteria to the healthy flowers.

  9. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Drafts: Place the vase in a location away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts, as these can cause the flowers to wilt faster.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your fresh cut flowers stay hydrated and beautiful for as long as possible in the vase.
